The city of Rome has expressed interest and agreed in principal to host a global Food for Health Learning and Livelihoods (F4H) Conference, organized jointly with AlimenTerra and The Sustainable Food Lab. Official support is subject to Clive Peckham's presentation of a full proposal to the Mayor of Rome in early March. The conference is tentatively scheduled for early 2007. Please contact Clive Peckham with ideas and suggestions for the event.

The current goals are:

  • To bring together and raise awareness of global best practice for institutional procurement of healthy and sustainably produced food.
  • To provide a forum to discuss and develop the key thematic areas below:
    • Policy development, implementation and advocacy
    • Sustainable supply chain development
    • Development of educational programs and related infrastructures for food and food production
    • Improvement of tenders and contracts
    • Sustainable menus, canteens and other food sales
    • Operational and management systems (e.g. kitchens)
  • To launch the ‘Alliance’ and its charter/declaration

The planned message of the conference is: public/institutional food systems are vital to help create food-conscious citizens instead of food "unaware" consumers.
